BOLLARDS
2015

Sculptural installation of an arrangement of locally sourced street bollards.

In 2015 I was invited to do a solo show, Common Patterns, in Derry (Londonderry) in Northern Ireland. One of the cities deeply marked by the conflict. When walking around the city you can notice that there is an unusual large number of bollards. They organize how we move around the city both pedestrians and drivers.

However, in Derry the bollards are not only there to organise our urban choreography, but to prevent cars from parking at specific places, to prevent car bombs. Functional objects which represent both control and despair.

For the show I made an installation where I was able to borrow various bollards from around the city. They appeared in all different shapes and colours and for me their characteristics gave them personalities. Personas, beholders of the histories of the streets of Derry.
